The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) is the keystone of European Union (EU) risk assessment regarding food and feed safety. In close collaboration with national authorities and in open consultation with its stakeholders, EFSA provides independent scientific advice and clear communication on existing and emerging risks.


Pesticides Scientist

Your key responsibilities
Contribute to the risk assessment of pesticides in one of the following scientific areas:
oPhysical/chemical properties of active substances (including micro-organisms) and plant protection products, analytical methods and efficacy assessment;
oMammalian toxicology and non-dietary risk assessment;
oPesticides residues, metabolisms in plants, dietary risk assessment and setting Maximum Residue Levels;
oEnvironmental Fate and Behaviour;
oEcotoxicology and environmental risk assessment.
Contribute to the peer review process regarding the risk assessment of pesticides active substances;Contribute to the preparation of working documents and the drafting of EFSA conclusions and reasoned opinions;Contribute to the drafting of scientific and technical outputs in relation to the relevant areas of the pesticides risk assessment;Contribute to the development and implementation of policies, procedures and guidance documents in the relevant area;Provide scientific contributions and administrative support to the PPR Panel (Plant Protection Products and their Residues) and its working groups;Coordinate the risk assessment process for pesticides.


You must satisfy the following requirements on the closing date for submission of your application:

I. Eligibility criteria

1. General requirements

Be a national of a Member State of the European Union, Iceland or Norway; Enjoy full rights as a citizen;Have fulfilled any obligations imposed by laws concerning military service;Be physically fit to perform the duties linked to the post;[1]Have a thorough knowledge of one of the EU official languages and a satisfactory knowledge of another EU language;Meet the character requirements for the duties involved.
2. Qualifications
A level of education which corresponds to completed university studies of at least three (3) years attested by a diploma in one of the following fields: agronomy, biotechnology, biology, biochemistry, chemistry, ecology, environmental science, food science and technology, human medicine, life sciences, public health, toxicology, veterinary medicine or related areas[2].
3. Experience
In addition to the above, at least one (1) year of relevant and proven professional experience gained after obtaining the diploma.[3]

II. Selection criteria

Experience and knowledge

i.Experience in the risk assessment of pesticides or risk assessment of similar areas preferably gained in an international / EU environment in at least one of the following topics:
Physical/chemical properties of active substances (including micro-organisms) and plant protection products, analytical methods and efficacy assessment;Mammalian toxicology and non-dietary risk assessment;Pesticides residues, metabolisms in plants, dietary risk assessment and setting Maximum Residue Levels;Environmental Fate and Behaviour;Ecotoxicology and environmental risk assessment;Management and coordination of scientific projects.
ii.Experience in providing scientific assistance and contributions to scientific working groups or bodies;
iii.Experience in drafting scientific documents (e.g. peer reviewed scientific publications, reports, meeting minutes, project plans and reports) and the development and implementation of guidance documents, policies and procedures;
iv.Basic knowledge of the EU regulatory framework in the area of food, feed or consumer safety, environmental protection or public health is an asset;
v.Knowledge of the regulatory risk assessment of pesticides is an asset.
